The Daily Growth Notes: 5 Tell-Tale Signs of Integrated Growth

This Week's Theme: 5 Tell-Tale Signs of Integrated Growth

Welcome to the first week of The Daily Growth Notes.

Each week, we'll explore one idea about growth and spend a few days looking at it from different angles. The goal isn't simply to learn a new concept. It's to start seeing it in your own work, your own business, and your own everyday decisions.

This week's theme is Integrated Growth.

Before we begin, let's put a definition around what we're looking for.
‍

What Is Integrated Growth?

Integrated Growth is the insightful, habitual integration of human excellence — creativity, judgment, synergistic relationships, love, and the drive to build something bigger than oneself — with material affordances — the finances, technologies, natural resources, infrastructure, processes, information, and other assets that make and sustain things valued in the world — around the Core of the business, with the aim of growing both, and the larger economy they share, together.

That's the full definition.

The shorthand is much simpler: Integrated Growth: One Core. Two things woven. Three things grown.

As you move through this week's notes, I encourage you to keep an Integrated Growth Journal. It can be a notebook, a document, or simply a place where you capture observations as you go.

Notice what you're seeing. Write down ideas you'd like to try. Pay attention to what begins to change when you make an Integrated Growth move. Note when you see others doing it, too. And don't forget to include your own growth.

You may also discover that something that works in one situation needs to be adjusted for another. Your journal is a place to capture those observations, questions, and experiments.

Let's begin.

‍

Day 1: Integrated Growth Starts Small

The Tell-Tale Sign

Integrated Growth starts small.

Big changes don't always begin with big moves. Sometimes, a small decision, conversation, connection, or experiment creates a ripple that eventually changes much more than expected.

Think back to a time when you, or someone you admire, made a small move that had a surprisingly positive impact.

What made it work?

‍

Today's Actions

Remember: Think of one small Integrated Growth move you or someone you admire made in the past that made a big positive difference. What made it work so well?

Act: What is one small Integrated Growth move you will commit to making today and repeating throughout the week?

Write it down. Then watch what happens.

‍

Day 2: Look for the Invisible

The Tell-Tale Sign

The dynamics of Integrated Growth are often invisible or implicit, but pervasive.

Not everything that creates growth arrives as a big announcement, initiative, or rollout.

A network of individual conversations, for example, can sometimes be more powerful than a major pronouncement from the top.

Integrated Growth can already be happening around you without anyone calling it that.

‍

Today's Action

Look around your business.

Identify three seeds or full-blown examples of Integrated Growth already happening. They may or may not have been explicitly recognized as contributing to Integrated Growth.

What are they?

Who or what is connected?

And what might happen if you paid more attention to them?

‍

Day 3: Growth Beyond One Person

The Tell-Tale Sign

The dynamics of Integrated Growth are generative beyond the role and control of any one leader or manager.

One of the most interesting things about growth is what happens after you stop trying to control every outcome.

When people, resources, ideas, and relationships begin working together in the right way, something new can emerge that no single person planned or directed.

‍

Today's Action

Think about your business, or one part of it.

What is pleasantly surprising you about the way it is developing?

Look especially for something that has emerged through practices of Integrated Growth, whether those practices were intentional or happened naturally.

What is growing that you didn't expect?

‍

Day 4: Discover What You Already Have

The Tell-Tale Sign

Most of the capital used to generate Integrated Growth isn't new.

The human excellence, material affordances, and Core of a business may have been there all along.

What changes is how those resources are identified, connected, and used together.

Sometimes growth begins not by acquiring something new, but by finally seeing what you already have.

‍

Today's Action

Identify one or more examples of capital from each of these three categories:

Human. Material. Core.

What do you have today that, six months ago, you didn't realize you had?

How is that capital being used?

How is it being combined with other forms of capital?

And how is it growing as a result?

Add your observations to your Integrated Growth Journal.

‍

Day 5: See Everything Differently

The Tell-Tale Sign

Once you experience Integrated Growth taking hold, everything can begin to look different.

Things that once seemed like the most important or unchangeable parts of the business may suddenly seem less important.

And things that once seemed minor may reveal themselves as vital.

You begin to see why approaching growth as an integrated system can create possibilities that are easy to miss when the human and material sides of the business are treated separately.

‍

Today's Action

Look back at your week.

Record one example of something that has flipped in your mind:

Something that once seemed like a big deal but doesn't seem quite so important now.

Then record something that once seemed minor but now feels major to you, your business, or your growth.

Bonus Action

What expected benefits are you seeing from the Integrated Growth approach?

What unexpected benefits are emerging?

And is there anything that isn't working?

If so, what do you think might be missing?

Write it down. Those observations may be just as valuable as the successes.

‍

Keep Looking

Integrated Growth isn't something you master in a week. It's something you begin to notice. Then you notice it again. Then you begin to act on what you're seeing. That's the purpose of The Daily Growth Notes: to give you a small idea, a practical action, and a reason to look at your business differently each day. Keep your journal close. You never know what you'll see tomorrow.

Stay tuned for next week's Daily Growth Series!
